PAU Entomologist Dr Sandeep Singh Wins National Environmental Research Award
PAU's Dr Sandeep Singh honoured with environmental research award

Dr Sandeep Singh, a principal entomologist specializing in fruits at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana, has been honoured with a prestigious national award for his significant contributions to environmental science and conservation.

Recognising Pioneering Work in Eco-Friendly Solutions

The "Excellence in Environmental Research Award" was presented to Dr Singh by the Abraham Verghese Insect and Nature Trust, based in Bengaluru. The award ceremony took place on December 14 in Bengaluru. The honour was conferred by two distinguished figures: Dr J P Singh, the Plant Protection Advisor to the Government of India, and Dr C A Viraktamath, a renowned octogenarian entomologist.

This recognition celebrates Dr Sandeep Singh's dual focus on innovative agricultural science and heritage conservation. His work is pivotal in advancing sustainable farming practices while preserving India's natural history.

Innovations in Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

The award specifically acknowledges Dr Singh's groundbreaking research in developing eco-friendly insect-pest management technologies. He has created effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) modules for various fruit crop pests, which reduce reliance on harmful chemical pesticides.

His notable inventions and research modules include:

  • The PAU fruit fly trap, a targeted solution for a common orchard menace.
  • The termite trap and the chaffer beetle trap.
  • Comprehensive IPM strategies for the litchi fruit borer, guava fruit borer, and the fruit sucking moth.

These technologies empower farmers with sustainable tools to protect their crops and enhance yield while safeguarding the ecosystem.

Conserving Heritage and Biodiversity at Sacred Sites

Beyond the orchard, Dr Singh's passion extends to environmental heritage. A significant part of the award recognises his dedicated efforts in conserving and rejuvenating centuries-old historical trees at gurdwaras across the country.

This unique project involves identifying, treating, and preserving ancient trees that are part of the religious and cultural landscape. His work not only saves these living monuments but also promotes biodiversity and environmental awareness at these sacred sites.

Dr H S Rattanpal, Head of the Department of Fruit Science at PAU, extended his congratulations to Dr Singh. He highlighted that this award adds to Dr Singh's impressive record of professional accomplishments, which includes several previous national and international awards, honours, and fellowships.

The award underscores the critical role of agricultural scientists in addressing broader environmental challenges. Dr Sandeep Singh's work exemplifies how targeted research in entomology can lead to tangible benefits for both food security and cultural heritage preservation in India.
