Review
Hollywood's obsession with turning games into movies is legendary. With Mortal Kombat, the popularity and nostalgia surrounding the game are so high that this fourth instalment of the film series, following quick successions since 2020, comes as no surprise. After the original Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins in 1995, fans have eagerly awaited brutal big-screen action, and this latest instalment serves as a direct sequel to the 2021 outing.
The film begins with a dark tale of young Kitana's (Sophia Xu) father, King Jerrod (Desmond Chiam), being assassinated by Shao Kahn. Right from the start, it is established as a revenge drama woven into high-octane games where survival of the fittest reigns. A grown-up Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) belongs to Outworld but must fight against superheroes like Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), and Earthrealm's protector Raiden (Tadanobu Asano). Joining them is bumbling has-been action hero Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), who cannot fathom why he is chosen for such a high-stakes mission. This is the tenth combat; if Shao Kahn wins, he can rule and enslave Earth.
The story by Jeremy Slater is fairly simple: the whole world is in danger, and it is up to a few bravehearts to save the day. That is precisely what makes this slick action extravaganza a fun watch. Within its 2-hour runtime, director Simon McQuoid ensures there is not a dull moment. Comedy is peppered into the screenplay amidst bloodshed and brutal action. Karl Urban's Johnny Cage may seem cartoonishly loud, but the actor wears the character's annoying traits with gusto and delivers a no-holds-barred performance. The best part is that even if you are not a fan of the game, it will not stop you from enjoying non-stop action, adventure, and entertainment.
Adeline Rudolph's charm lies in her restraint as a young woman waiting for the right time to avenge her father's death. The rest of the cast provides good support, and the film thankfully never slumps into melodramatic emotional mess. A generous dose of comedy in dialogue and slapstick fun keeps the proceedings light. The setting of games in two different realms, both mystical and dark, works well as Stephen F. Windon's cinematography breathes life into even the most VFX-heavy sequences.
Final Verdict
Mortal Kombat II is not a film meant just for die-hard fans; it is quite the opposite. It is a full-throttle, universally appealing action spectacle that knows exactly how to give audiences their money's worth.
