Man works 84 years at same company, sets world record

In an era where job-hopping has become the norm for career growth, the extraordinary story of Walter Orthmann stands as a remarkable testament to loyalty and dedication. This 100-year-old Brazilian man has achieved what seems impossible in today's fast-paced world - spending over eight decades with the same organization.

The Record-Breaking Career Journey

Walter Orthmann officially entered the Guinness World Records on January 6, 2022, for the longest career at a single company, with an incredible 84 years and 9 days of service. His journey began back on January 17, 1938, when he was just 15 years old, taking a position as a shipping assistant at Industrias Renaux S.A., now known as RenauxView, located in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Coming from a financially challenged family where he was the eldest of five children, Walter's early start in the workforce was driven by necessity. "Back in 1938, kids were expected to work to help support the family," Walter told Guinness World Records. "As the oldest son of five, my mother took me to find a job at the age of 14." His proficiency in German played a crucial role in securing his initial position.

Rising Through The Ranks With Dedication

Walter's career trajectory within the same organization demonstrates how talent and dedication can lead to remarkable growth. Starting as a shipping assistant, his exceptional memory, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn quickly caught the attention of his superiors. These qualities earned him promotions first to administrative assistant and eventually to sales manager.

In his sales role, Walter truly excelled, building lasting relationships with clients and adapting seamlessly to the evolving business landscape. He recalled a significant early achievement to Guinness World Records: "I was given the opportunity to work as a salesperson. I traveled to São Paulo and in less than one week I filled the production with orders equivalent of three months of work."

A Century of Life and Work

Walter Orthmann celebrated his 100th birthday on April 19, 2022, surrounded by colleagues, family, and friends who have witnessed his incredible journey. This milestone came after he had already broken his own previous record set in 2019, which stood at 81 years and 85 days.

For Walter, the Guinness World Records certification represents an unexpected honor that caps his extraordinary career. "Looking back, despite never having contemplated breaking a record, I think my proudest achievement was being certified as the title holder for the longest career in the same company," he stated.

His story serves as powerful inspiration in today's employment landscape, proving that passion for one's work, continuous motivation, and adaptability can transform an ordinary job into an extraordinary lifetime accomplishment. While modern professionals often switch organizations every few years seeking growth, Walter's 84-year tenure demonstrates that deep commitment to a single organization can lead to both personal fulfillment and world recognition.
