Karnataka Government Honors Literary Luminary Devanura Mahadeva with Pampa Award
The Government of Karnataka has announced the selection of renowned novelist and intellectual Devanura Mahadeva for the prestigious Pampa Award for the year 2024. This distinguished honor recognizes individuals who have made exceptional and lasting contributions to Kannada literature and the cultural heritage of Karnataka.
Celebrating Excellence in Kannada Literature and Culture
Established in the name of Adikavi Pampa, the first Kannada poet, the Pampa Award is conferred annually by the state government. The selection committee identifies eminent personalities who have rendered distinguished service in the field of literature and have significantly enriched Kannada language and Karnataka's cultural landscape. The inaugural recipient of this esteemed award was poet laureate Kuvempu back in 1987.
Devanura Mahadeva: A Literary Journey of Distinction and Principle
Born in 1948 in Devanura village within Nanjangud taluk, Mahadeva pursued his postgraduate studies in Kannada literature from the prestigious University of Mysore. His literary career has been marked by both recognition and principled stands. He was honored with the Central Sahitya Akademi award in 1990 for his outstanding literary work, followed by the Padma Shri award in 2011 for his contributions to literature and education.
In a notable act of protest, Mahadeva returned both these national awards in 2015, making a powerful statement about contemporary social and political issues. Despite this, his literary contributions continue to be celebrated, with the Pampa Award representing the latest acknowledgment of his profound impact on Kannada literature.
