Global football icon and philanthropist David Beckham recently concluded a significant visit to India, marking a dual celebration of his two-decade-long association with UNICEF and his deep connection with the country. The former England captain, who travelled as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in late November, spent time engaging with children and visiting educational projects in Mumbai and Visakhapatnam.
A Journey of Purpose and Connection
This trip was Beckham's second to India, following his initial visit in 2023. The core agenda was centred on UNICEF's work, commemorating 20 years since he first became a Goodwill Ambassador. In an exclusive conversation with Bombay Times upon returning to the UK, Beckham emphasized the profound impact of these field visits. He described seeing firsthand the projects that support young people as "one of the most rewarding things I do."
During his tour, he visited initiatives supported by UNICEF and also spent time at a school funded by the charity Education Above All. "Looking at the projects they fund so all children can receive a quality education and get the skills they need to succeed in life is crucial," Beckham stated. Beyond the charity work, he revelled in the local culture, playing football with children and sampling dishes like Dal ki Chaat.
Bollywood Fascination and a Landmark Year
Beckham's admiration for Indian cinema remains strong. "Bollywood really does fascinate me - it's incredible," he shared, recalling his memorable meetings with stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Sara Ali Khan, and Sonam Kapoor during his 2023 visit. He praised their craft and the warm welcome he received.
The year 2025 has been momentous for Beckham personally. He celebrated his 50th birthday and, in a landmark achievement, received a knighthood from King Charles III at Windsor Castle in November 2025 for his services to sport and charity. Reflecting on this, he expressed immense gratitude for his family, career, and post-retirement philanthropic work. "I'm pleased with where I am, but I am one of those people who always keeps going... I've always got a drive to do more and I'm excited for what the future holds," he affirmed.
The Unwavering Drive for Gender Equality
At the heart of Beckham's two-decade UNICEF commitment is a foundational belief in children's potential and rights. "I joined UNICEF because I believe children are our greatest source of hope," he explained. A central pillar of his advocacy is gender equality, a cause he passionately champions as a father.
"What keeps me going is the same belief I had on day one: that every child deserves a fair chance, especially girls, who still face barriers they shouldn't have to," Beckham said. He made a powerful personal statement, adding, "As a parent, I can't imagine a world where my daughter has fewer chances than my sons."
He directly linked access to education and digital skills for girls to unlocking new possibilities, building confidence, ensuring safety, and fostering independence. "These are simple things, but they make a huge difference in a girl's life," Beckham concluded, underscoring his ongoing mission. His visit to India perfectly blended this earnest advocacy with his genuine appreciation for the country's vibrant spirit and its people's deep love for football.
