2026 Grammys Add 5 New Categories Including Best Asian Pop

The Recording Academy has unveiled a series of rule changes for the 2026 Grammy Awards, including the introduction of five new categories. The announcement was made on Tuesday, signaling a significant update to the awards structure.

New Categories for 2026

The academy has added a Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, which will honor releases spanning K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and other Asian pop genres. The award will be presented to the performer. Additionally, a new Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance category will recognize artists whose music "cannot properly be intermingled with present forms of pop music," according to an official press release.

A new Best Latin Song category has been created to acknowledge songwriters for their work on Latin songs recorded predominantly in Spanish. This move highlights the growing influence of Latin music globally.

Changes in R&B and Folk Categories

The R&B and folk categories have also seen revisions. A new Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance award joins the reimagined Best R&B Solo Performance category. In the folk genre, the Best Folk Album award has been renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album, while a new Best Traditional Folk Album category has been introduced, mirroring changes made to the country categories last year.

Updated Rules for Best New Artist

In addition to the new categories, the academy has modified the eligibility criteria for several awards. The most notable change involves the Best New Artist category. Artists can now submit up to four times, an increase from the previous limit of three. This adjustment aims to better reflect the current music market, where artists may take longer to achieve breakthrough success.

There is no specified maximum number of previous releases for consideration. A screening committee will determine "whether the artist had attained this high degree of impact in the music industry prior to the eligibility year," as stated in the rule book. Artists who have previously received a Grammy nomination are not eligible for this category.

Furthermore, the Grammys will allow certain qualified members to vote in more categories, expanding their participation in the awards process.

CEO's Statement

Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, expressed enthusiasm about the changes. "2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we're seeing across music," he said in a statement. "The changes advanced by our Recording Academy members speak to the breadth of today's music industry and the many genres, crafts and creators shaping it. We're excited to see these updates come to life in the year ahead as we celebrate the music people who are driving music forward."

These updates aim to modernize the Grammys and better represent the diverse landscape of contemporary music.
