WBNUJS Offers Exam Flexibility and Counseling After Student's Tragic Death
In a compassionate response to a recent tragedy, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) in Kolkata has announced that students too distressed to take their end-semester exams, scheduled to begin on Friday, will be allowed to defer them to a later date. This decision follows the untimely death of a 19-year-old first-year law student on Monday, which has deeply affected the campus community.
Humanitarian Grounds for Exam Postponement
An official from WBNUJS explained the rationale behind this move, stating that some students, particularly those close to the deceased, are in a state of shock and require additional time to cope with their loss. "On humanitarian grounds, it was decided that those who will not be able to take the exam on Friday can do so at a later date," the official said. This flexibility aims to support the emotional well-being of the students during this difficult period, ensuring they are not penalized academically while grieving.
Campus-Wide Condolence and Counseling Initiatives
The university has taken proactive steps to address the grief and trauma within its student body. On Thursday, WBNUJS held a formal condolence meeting on campus to honor the memory of the deceased student. Additionally, on Wednesday, the student body organized a separate condolence gathering and an online grief counseling session, which saw significant participation from students.
A student representative highlighted the importance of these efforts, noting, "The university has a counsellor who is available, but we thought of organising a specialised grief counselling session where an expert from outside interacted with the students. The participation was good, and we plan to hold such sessions at regular intervals." This initiative underscores the institution's commitment to providing comprehensive mental health support beyond standard resources.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The incident involved a first-year law student who reportedly fell from the sixth floor of a hostel building in Salt Lake, Kolkata. Authorities have confirmed that no suicide note was discovered at the scene, leaving the circumstances surrounding the death under investigation. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the WBNUJS community, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures and ongoing emotional support systems.
As the university navigates this challenging time, the focus remains on balancing academic responsibilities with the need for compassion and care. The exam deferral policy and counseling sessions are part of a broader effort to foster a supportive environment, helping students heal while maintaining their educational pursuits.
