The University of Mysore (UoM) is set to celebrate a major academic milestone with its 106th annual convocation on Monday. The prestigious event will see the conferral of honorary doctorates on four distinguished personalities and the awarding of thousands of degrees to successful candidates.

Honorary Doctorates for Luminaries

In a significant highlight, the university will bestow honorary doctorates upon four eminent individuals for their exceptional contributions to society. The recipients are SV Rajendra Singh Babu, a renowned film director and producer; T Sham Bhatt, the acting chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission and a retired IAS officer; and P Jayachandra Raju, the founding trustee of the Global Education Trust. This recognition underscores the university's commitment to honoring excellence beyond the confines of academia.

A Convocation of Record Numbers and Achievements

Vice-Chancellor NK Lokanath, addressing reporters, revealed impressive statistics for this year's convocation. A staggering 30,966 candidates will receive various degrees, with a notable majority—18,612 or 60.1%—being female students. This reflects a positive trend towards gender parity in higher education.

In the realm of postgraduate and undergraduate awards, a total of 442 medals and 197 cash prizes will be shared by 213 candidates across five faculties. Among these high achievers, 158 are female students. The top medal winner is N Aditi, who secured an extraordinary 24 medals and 8 cash prizes in MSc Chemistry.

The university will also confer 449 PhD degrees in various subjects, with 211 (46.99%) of these doctoral degrees being awarded to female research scholars.

Dignitaries and Schedule

The convocation address will be delivered by Dr. S. Somanath, the former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), at 11:30 am. The event will be presided over by Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot, with State Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar serving as the chief guest for the main ceremony.

Later in the day, the degree presentation ceremony will commence at 3 pm. Sudhanva Dhananjaya, Chairman and Managing Director of Excelsoft Technologies, will be the chief guest for this session.

The convocation stands as a testament to the University of Mysore's enduring legacy in fostering education, research, and recognizing service to the nation. The detailed breakdown of degrees awarded includes 5,796 postgraduate degrees and 24,721 undergraduate degrees, alongside the 449 PhDs.
