Chennai's prestigious SSN College of Engineering has officially announced it will cease accepting new students starting from the 2026–27 academic year. This marks the beginning of a phased closure for one of Tamil Nadu's most renowned engineering institutions, which will eventually merge with Shiv Nadar University Chennai.
Regulatory Approval and Phased Merger Plan
The decision to progressively wind down the college follows formal approvals from both Anna University and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). This ensures the entire process adheres strictly to academic regulations and guidelines.
The institution will be merged in stages with Shiv Nadar University Chennai, which operates from an adjacent campus. Academic programs will gradually transition under the university's framework. An update on the college's official website clearly directs future applicants, stating, “SSN College of Engineering is no longer accepting applications. Students are advised to apply to the SSN School of Engineering at Shiv Nadar University Chennai for similar programmes.”
Impact on Current and Future Students
Currently, more than 4,800 students—including undergraduates, postgraduates, and research scholars—are enrolled at SSN College. The college has assured that all existing students will be able to complete their studies without any disruption.
Importantly, degrees for current students will continue to be awarded by Anna University, as the closure is progressive. There will be no forced migration or loss of academic standing for any batch. Faculty members have also been assured that they will continue teaching until the final batch graduates, and existing Anna University academic rules will remain in effect.
New Admission Process and Fee Structure Shift
From the 2026–27 session onward, no fresh admissions will be taken for UG, PG, or research programs at SSN College of Engineering. Aspiring students seeking BTech or MTech seats must now apply to the SSN School of Engineering at Shiv Nadar University Chennai.
The selection process at the university level will be based on an entrance test and interview, moving away from reliance solely on Class XII marks. This signifies a significant shift in the admission criteria.
A major change will be seen in the fee structure. At SSN College, students under the government quota paid approximately ₹55,000 per year. In contrast, the annual BTech tuition fee at Shiv Nadar University Chennai is around ₹3.5 lakh. However, the university has provided assurance that currently enrolled SSN students will continue to pay fees according to their original batch norms, with no mid-course revisions.
The phased closure of SSN College of Engineering concludes a notable chapter in Tamil Nadu's technical education landscape, integrating its legacy into the broader framework of Shiv Nadar University Chennai.
