University of Rajasthan Students Stage Protest Over Canteen Closure, Set Up Makeshift Tea Stall

Students at the University of Rajasthan organized a significant protest on Friday, demanding the immediate resumption of canteen services that were shut down due to severe financial issues. The demonstration took place outside the vice chancellor's office, where participants creatively set up a makeshift stove to prepare and serve tea to fellow students, symbolizing their urgent need for basic campus amenities.

Student Leader Highlights Lack of Basic Amenities

Student leader Shubham Rewar, who initiated the makeshift tea stall, expressed deep frustration over the situation. "Students are being deprived of essential amenities like tea, snacks, or light meals that were previously available in the canteen," Rewar stated. "They are bearing the brunt of this closure, as purchasing food from outside is not always feasible or affordable for everyone." This protest underscores the growing discontent among the student body regarding the administration's handling of campus facilities.

Threat of Escalated Agitation and NSUI Involvement

During the protest, students issued a clear warning to the university administration: if swift action is not taken to address their demands, they will intensify their agitation further. Later in the day, the protest gained momentum as members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) joined in. The NSUI set up a snack stall inside the campus, displaying a poster titled ‘Students’ Canteen’ to highlight their support for the cause.

Manish Meghvanshi, president of the NSUI unit at the University, emphasized the urgency of the situation. "If the administration fails to make proper arrangements, students will be forced to take matters into their own hands," Meghvanshi declared. He outlined specific demands, including:

  • Reopening of the canteen with regular cleaning of the premises
  • Provision of quality food and clean drinking water
  • Adequate seating arrangements for students
  • Regulated prices for food items to ensure affordability

The protest reflects broader issues of student welfare and administrative accountability in educational institutions, with students advocating for their right to accessible and affordable campus services.
