Panjab University in Chandigarh has moved into a stricter enforcement phase for campus traffic management, following the successful completion of its QR code-based vehicle sticker distribution drive. University officials confirmed that the focus has now shifted to tightening gate-level checks, particularly targeting vehicles not belonging to students or authorised personnel.

New Lanes and Streamlined Entry at Gate 2

As a core part of the new measures, the administration has implemented a physical segregation of traffic at the busy Gate 2 entrance. Two separate lanes have been created: one dedicated for vehicles displaying the official university QR stickers, and another for vehicles without them. This structural change is aimed at making security checks more efficient and targeted.

The QR sticker system, introduced earlier this year, was a response to repeated complaints about unauthorised parking and excessive vehicular movement within the campus. The university had acknowledged that the lack of a proper vehicle identification system was a major hurdle for effective enforcement. The recent drive saw the issuance of approximately 1,800 QR stickers to students, helping the university build a verified database of authorised four-wheelers.

Enhanced Security and Reduced Congestion

With the new lane system in place, vehicles bearing the QR stickers are now allowed smoother and quicker entry. This has allowed security personnel to concentrate their efforts on a narrower pool of vehicles. "Earlier, every vehicle was stopped, which made it difficult to identify outsiders," explained a senior PU security official. "Now, stickered vehicles can pass quickly, allowing us to focus on cars that do not belong to students."

Officials report that this segregation has had multiple positive effects. It has significantly eased congestion at the gate and improved overall visibility. This clearer passage aids in the better monitoring of two-wheeler traffic and pedestrian movement, which was previously hampered by the constant flow of unchecked four-wheelers.

Future Expansion and Core Objective

Based on the initial success and the operational feasibility observed at Gate 2, security officials indicated that similar checking mechanisms may be extended to other entry points of the university campus. The decision will be influenced by ongoing assessments of traffic flow patterns at different gates.

The university administration has clarified that the primary goal of this entire exercise is to regulate internal traffic and restrict the entry of outsider vehicles, not to cause inconvenience to its student community. The system is designed to make campus life more orderly and secure for those who live and study there. The establishment of a verified database through the QR stickers is seen as a foundational step for long-term, tech-aided campus management.
