Patliputra University to Implement OMR-Based Exams for Skill Courses from 2026
In a significant move to modernize its evaluation system, Patliputra University (PPU) in Patna has announced that it will conduct examinations for ability enhancement courses (AEC), skill enhancement courses (SEC), and value-added courses (VAC) using an OMR-based system. This new approach is scheduled to commence from the next academic session, beginning in April 2026.
Alignment with National Education Policy-2020
According to PPU examination controller Manoj Kumar, this decision has been taken in strict accordance with the guidelines outlined in the National Education Policy-2020 (NEP-2020). The policy strongly emphasizes skill development, flexibility in learning, and the adoption of modern evaluation methods within higher education institutions across India.
The primary objective of this shift is to streamline the assessment process, ensuring quicker and more transparent evaluation of these specialized courses. These courses are specifically designed to enhance students' practical abilities and overall employability in a competitive job market.
Building on Existing Reforms
Patliputra University has already taken proactive steps by implementing the four-year degree programme under the choice-based credit system (CBCS), a key provision of the new education policy. Kumar explained that this programme was introduced to meet the evolving academic and professional needs of students in the current educational landscape.
The university administration has further revealed its plans to extend the same OMR-based examination system to vocational courses in the near future. This step is expected to align vocational education more closely with the NEP-2020 framework, providing students with improved opportunities for skill-based learning and practical training.

Adopting OMR-based examinations is anticipated to make the evaluation process significantly more efficient while maintaining high standards of fairness and accuracy. Expansion into Legal Education
In a related development, the College of Commerce, Arts and Science at Patliputra University is likely to start offering LLB courses from the next academic session this year. While the state government has already approved the proposal, the university is currently awaiting final approval from the Bar Council of India.
Sources indicate that LLB teaching, which had been halted for the last three years due to inadequate infrastructure, is now set to receive approval for 120 seats. This move marks a significant step in expanding the university's academic offerings and addressing the demand for legal education in the region.
