Patna University's Historic Centenaries Pass Without Official Commemoration
Nearly a century after two landmark institutions of Patna University that shaped Bihar's academic and intellectual legacy, the university has allowed their centenary moments to pass without any official commemoration. This neglect has drawn significant concern from senior academicians and alumni who view these institutions as vital symbols of the state's educational heritage.
Missed Opportunity for Educational Legacy
The absence of any official commemoration for the Wheeler Senate House and the approaching centenary of Patna Science College represents a lost opportunity to reconnect younger generations with Bihar's rich educational history. Despite both institutions emerging as symbols of academic excellence and cultural pride, no formal celebrations were organized to mark the 100th anniversary of the Wheeler Senate House, which was inaugurated on March 20, 1926.
Former head of Patna University's ancient Indian history and archaeology department Jayadeo Mishra stated that the absence of commemorative events reflects poorly on the university administration's commitment to preserving its legacy. "These institutions are not just buildings but living monuments to Bihar's intellectual history," Mishra emphasized.
Wheeler Senate House: A Historic Academic Venue
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 1.75 lakh entirely funded by Raja Devaki Nandan Prasad Singh of Munger, the Wheeler Senate House has hosted some of the most illustrious names in India's public and academic life. The historic hall has witnessed university convocations addressed by leaders and luminaries including Lord Mountbatten, Sarojini Naidu, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, C D Deshmukh, V K R V Rao, and Vijayalakshmi Pandit.
Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and renowned scientists Jagdish Chandra Bose, C V Raman, Meghnad Saha, and Satyen Bose also interacted with students and faculty here on various occasions, cementing the building's place in national academic history. The Wheeler Senate House stands as a testament to Patna University's historical significance in India's educational landscape.
Patna Science College Centenary Approaches
A similar neglect appears to shadow Patna Science College, which is set to enter its centenary year in July. Despite its pivotal role in advancing science education in eastern India, no concrete initiative has yet been announced to mark 100 years of this prestigious institution.
The college formally came into being after science classes were separated from Patna College and shifted to a newly designated campus in July 1927, following government sanction in December 1926. While teaching began in partially constructed buildings, the fully developed campus complete with laboratories and academic facilities was inaugurated on November 15, 1928, by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin.
Center of Scientific Excellence
Patna Science College was conceived as a center of excellence from its inception. Its physics and chemistry laboratories, constructed during 1927-28 on the lines of Oxford and Cambridge universities under the guidance of K S Caldwell, were equipped with cutting-edge instruments of the era.
The physics laboratory offered facilities not only for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching but also for advanced research, housing an astronomical observatory, an instrument repair workshop, and an equipment museum. This infrastructure positioned the college as a premier scientific institution in eastern India during its early decades.
Educational Significance of Commemoration
Academicians argue that commemorating the centenary of these institutions would not merely be symbolic but educational. Such celebrations would provide an opportunity to showcase Bihar's historic contributions to higher learning and inspire students at a time when universities are striving to reaffirm their relevance and identity.
"These centenaries represent more than just anniversaries," explained a senior faculty member. "They are opportunities to educate current students about the rich academic traditions that have shaped our state and nation. By ignoring these milestones, we risk disconnecting future generations from their educational heritage."
The lack of official recognition for these historic milestones raises questions about institutional memory and the preservation of academic heritage in Bihar's premier university. As Patna University moves forward, many hope it will find ways to honor its past while building for the future.
