The achievement was officially confirmed on November 19, 2025, with university authorities celebrating this remarkable progress as evidence of their sustained commitment to academic excellence and environmental responsibility.
Comprehensive Ranking Improvements Across Boards
The university's advancement in the global sustainability rankings corresponds with improved performance across multiple geographic categories. In Asia, Panjab University rose from 189th to 144th position, while domestically, it climbed from 21st to 16th place among Indian institutions.
PU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig emphasized that the institution has shown improvement across all parameters in both national and international rankings. She particularly highlighted that the university achieved 3rd place among state public universities, moving up from 5th position in 2024.
Excellence in Professional Education Categories
The university's success story extends beyond sustainability rankings to include notable achievements in professional education categories. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Pharmacy category, Panjab University advanced from 7th to 3rd position, establishing itself among the top pharmacy institutions in the country.
Additionally, the university made a significant comeback in engineering education, re-entering the NIRF engineering list at 93rd position this year after previously being absent from the rankings.
Globally, Panjab University moved from the 1001-1200 band to the more prestigious 901-950 band in the QS World University Rankings 2026. Meanwhile, the institution has maintained its position in the 601-800 band in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2026 edition.
Leadership Attributes Success to Collective Efforts
Prof. Renu Vig credited this outstanding performance to the dedicated efforts of the entire university community. "This outcome highlights the collective efforts of our faculty, staff, researchers, and students in embracing sustainability as a strategic priority," she stated.
The Vice-Chancellor further elaborated on the institution's vision, noting that "These achievements reaffirm our commitment to fostering a forward-looking, research-driven, and socially responsible academic ecosystem. We remain dedicated to building globally competitive standards that reflect PU's long-standing legacy of excellence."
The consistent improvement across multiple ranking parameters indicates Panjab University's strategic focus on enhancing educational quality, research output, and sustainable practices. This multi-dimensional growth approach appears to be yielding significant dividends in both national and international assessments of higher education institutions.
