University of Madras Sees Surge in Applications for New Arts and Science Colleges in Chennai
The University of Madras has received a significant influx of nine applications from various educational trusts seeking to establish new arts and science colleges in Chennai and its surrounding suburbs for the upcoming academic year of 2026-27. This development highlights a growing trend in the region's educational landscape, with trusts aiming to expand their offerings beyond engineering to meet increasing student demand.
Locations and Details of Proposed Colleges
The proposed colleges are planned for multiple locations across Chennai and nearby districts, including Royapettah, Alandur, Vyasarpadi, Vedachalam Nagar, Mannivakkam, and Maduranthakam in Chengalpet district, as well as Pattabiram, Thirumullaivoyal, and Podaturpet in Tiruvallur district. According to a university official, this shift is driven by the rising popularity of arts and science courses, prompting trusts that previously focused on engineering colleges to diversify their educational portfolios.
Comparison with Previous Years and Affiliation Process
In the previous academic year, the University of Madras received only five applications for new arts and science colleges, indicating a notable increase in interest. Additionally, about five trusts have applied for affiliation to new standalone colleges, further emphasizing the expansion in this sector. The university will grant approval for affiliation once the government issues the necessary orders for starting new colleges. Initially, these colleges can launch with any of five courses, provided they have the required faculty and infrastructure.
Infrastructure Requirements and Land Specifications
To establish a new college, trusts must meet specific land requirements: a minimum of two acres within corporation limits, three acres in municipality areas, and five acres in village panchayat regions. This ensures that colleges have adequate space for facilities such as labs, playgrounds, and other essential infrastructure.
Expert Insights on the Growing Demand
S P Thyagaraman, former vice-chancellor of the University of Madras, commented on the trend, noting that there has been a sustained demand for arts and science courses in city colleges over the past few years, which likely sparked interest in starting new institutions. He emphasized that the establishment of more colleges in suburban areas is beneficial, as it reduces travel distances for students. However, he urged the university to ensure that all new colleges adhere to minimum infrastructure standards, including proper labs, qualified faculty, and recreational spaces like playgrounds.
This move is expected to enhance educational accessibility and quality in the region, catering to the evolving needs of students and the community.
