The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a new textbook for Class 9 arts that aims to bring India's rich cultural heritage alive through hands-on learning. The textbook, titled 'India's Cultural Heritage: A Hands-On Approach', is designed to engage students with interactive activities and projects that explore various aspects of Indian art, music, dance, and crafts.
Key Features of the Textbook
The textbook includes chapters on traditional Indian paintings, sculpture, architecture, and performing arts. Each chapter incorporates practical exercises such as creating rangoli patterns, learning basic dance steps, or constructing models of historical monuments. The goal is to foster a deeper appreciation of India's diverse cultural traditions.
Hands-On Learning Approach
Instead of relying solely on theoretical knowledge, the textbook encourages students to actively participate in cultural activities. For example, students can learn about the significance of Warli art by creating their own Warli paintings, or understand the principles of Indian classical music by experimenting with simple ragas.
Teacher and Student Feedback
Early feedback from teachers and students has been positive. Many educators believe that the interactive approach makes learning more enjoyable and memorable. Students have expressed enthusiasm for the hands-on projects, which allow them to express their creativity while learning about their heritage.
Alignment with National Education Policy 2020
The new textbook aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes experiential learning and the integration of arts into the curriculum. NCERT officials stated that the textbook is part of a broader effort to revitalize arts education in schools.
Future Plans
NCERT plans to develop similar textbooks for other classes and subjects, focusing on hands-on and experiential learning. The organization aims to make education more holistic and engaging for students across the country.
