University of Mumbai Postpones Third-Year Exams to Resolve CET Schedule Conflict

The University of Mumbai has taken decisive action by postponing several third-year undergraduate examinations following a significant scheduling clash with the Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (CET) calendar. This move comes in direct response to student concerns and aims to eliminate conflicts for those appearing for both university papers and crucial entrance tests.

Student Concerns Trigger Timetable Revision

Students from multiple colleges had raised serious concerns after discovering that numerous semester examinations coincided with key CET entrance tests scheduled between late March and early April. This overlap presented a difficult choice for many students who needed to appear for both their final-year university exams and entrance tests required for admission to professional and postgraduate programmes.

While the University of Mumbai had released its academic calendar earlier, the CET Cell had announced tentative entrance test dates in November last year. With the CET schedule now finalized, the university recognized the need for immediate intervention to prevent student disadvantage.

Detailed Examination of the CET Schedule Conflict

The CET examination cycle presents a packed schedule beginning with the bachelor of education entrance test on March 27. This is followed by the master of computer applications entrance examination on March 30, with the three-year law CET scheduled for April 1 and April 2. The entrance examinations for master of business administration and masters in management studies programmes will take place between April 6 and April 8.

Several third-year examinations in the arts, commerce and science streams were originally scheduled on these exact dates, creating a direct overlap that could have severely impacted students planning to appear for both university papers and entrance tests.

Comprehensive Rescheduling of 28 Examination Papers

In response to this scheduling crisis, the university has rescheduled 28 examination papers across various undergraduate courses. The revised timetable represents a comprehensive solution to ensure students can participate in both academic assessments without disruption.

According to the new schedule, the fifth-semester bachelor of commerce examination originally scheduled for March 27 will now be conducted on April 4. Examinations for third-year bachelor of arts, third-year bachelor of science, third-year bachelor of science in computer science, and third-year bachelor of arts in multimedia and mass communication that were earlier planned for March 27 will now be held on April 9.

Extended Timeline Changes Through Mid-April

The rescheduling extends well into mid-April with papers originally scheduled for March 30 now taking place on April 10. Examinations that were planned for April 1, April 2 and April 4 have been rescheduled to April 11, April 13 and April 15 respectively.

Additionally, some sixth-semester science and mass communication examinations that were earlier set for April 8 will now be conducted on April 16. Certain papers from the university’s distance and online education department scheduled on conflicting dates have also been moved to April 9 as part of this comprehensive revision.

The university's proactive approach demonstrates its commitment to student welfare and academic fairness, ensuring that no student faces disadvantage due to scheduling conflicts between university examinations and state entrance tests.
