MAHE and Helogen Forge Strategic Partnership for Space Biomedical Research

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has entered into a significant collaboration agreement with New York-based Helogen Corporation to pioneer space-based biomedical research, with a primary emphasis on studying human biology in microgravity environments. This partnership establishes a comprehensive framework for joint mission planning, experiment design, and the development of advanced biomaterials in orbit.

Focus on Organoid Research and Scalable Studies

The program will center on organoid research, specifically investigating muscle growth and bone loss, with applications that extend both to space exploration and terrestrial healthcare. MAHE will lead the space biology component, designing experiments that align with India's emerging human spaceflight initiatives and the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station. Representatives emphasized that the research will prioritize scalable and repeatable studies capable of translating into clinical and industrial applications.

Integration of Expertise and Technology

The collaboration will merge MAHE's extensive organoid research capabilities with Helogen's sophisticated orbital platforms, including the Cell Environment Life Support (CELS) and HEL-ICS systems. These systems enable automated cultivation and continuous monitoring of biological samples in space. Helogen will provide end-to-end mission support, encompassing all aspects of in-orbit operations.

Manash K Paul from the Manipal School of Life Sciences has been appointed as the principal investigator, leading a multidisciplinary team that incorporates clinical expertise from Kasturba Medical College and engineering inputs from the Manipal Institute of Technology.

Leadership Perspectives on the Collaboration

MAHE Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) MD Venkatesh stated that this collaboration reflects the university's strategic focus on research at the intersection of biomedical science and space technology. Helogen CEO Shishir Bankapur highlighted that the agreement will leverage microgravity for next-generation biomedical advancements, noting that the Indian team brings valuable prior experience from experiments associated with the International Space Station.

Helogen's Automated Orbital Systems

Helogen specializes in developing automated orbital systems for manufacturing high-value biomaterials, integrating biological cultivation and analysis into continuous workflows in space. The company asserts that such infrastructure can minimize the need for frequent crew intervention while facilitating large-scale experiments in orbit.

Representatives from both organizations indicated that this partnership is expected to support long-term research in microgravity as India continues to expand its ambitious space exploration programs.
