Lucknow University Files FIR Over Campus Vandalism and Namaz Incident

Lucknow University authorities have taken legal action by lodging a First Information Report (FIR) against some unidentified students and outsiders. The charges include rioting, vandalism, and disturbing communal harmony on the university campus. This move follows a recent incident that has sparked controversy and debate.

Details of the FIR and Complaint

The FIR was officially lodged by Registrar Bhavana Mishra on behalf of Lucknow University. According to the complaint, on February 22, some unidentified students, along with a few outsiders, vandalised the barricading around the historic Lal Baradari on the campus. Subsequently, they offered namaz followed by roza iftari at the site.

Registrar Mishra explained in the complaint that Lal Baradari has been barricaded due to its dilapidated condition, which poses a significant risk of collapse and potential harm to people. She stated that the vandalism of the fencing around Lal Baradari was an unlawful act. Furthermore, offering namaz outside Lal Baradari, which is designated as a public place, was cited as contributing to the disturbance.

The complaint alleges that these actions amounted to unlawful assembly, obstruction of officials from performing their duties, and a disturbance of public order and communal harmony. The university authorities are emphasizing the safety concerns and legal violations involved in this incident.

Student Perspective and Response

However, the students involved in offering namaz have presented a different viewpoint. They claim that they were opposing the sealing of the mosque located within Lal Baradari. According to these students, the mosque is not damaged and has been regularly used for offering prayers. With the month of Ramazan underway, they stated that they only offered prayers and broke their fast as part of their religious observance.

Later, students reported that they staged a demonstration and took out a peaceful protest march to voice their concerns. This highlights a potential clash between administrative decisions and student rights or religious practices on campus.

Police Investigation and Analysis

Additional Inspector Pramod Kumar Pandey from the Hasanganj police station has confirmed that viral videos of the events that took place on February 22 are being thoroughly analysed. The police are working to identify the individuals who created a ruckus during the incident. This investigation aims to bring clarity and accountability to the situation, ensuring that all parties involved are properly addressed according to the law.

The incident at Lucknow University underscores ongoing tensions between campus authorities and student groups, particularly in matters involving historical sites, safety regulations, and religious activities. As the investigation progresses, further developments are expected to shed light on the complexities of this case.
