Kodagu University Submits Proposal for Model Kodava Culture Foundation
A significant proposal has been formally submitted to the state government to establish a model Kodava Culture Foundation at Kodagu University. This initiative is designed as a permanent, research-driven, and community-linked institution, supported by a substantial Rs 10-crore endowment fund. The foundation aims to serve as a cornerstone for preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Kodava community through innovative and sustainable methods.
Financial Sustainability and Governance Structure
Vice-chancellor Ashoka Sangappa Alura emphasized that the foundation's operations will rely solely on the annual interest or investment income generated from the Rs 10-crore corpus. This strategic approach ensures long-term financial sustainability without depleting the principal amount. The foundation is proposed to be established with statutory approval under the Karnataka State Universities framework, providing it with a robust legal and administrative foundation to carry out its mission effectively.
Core Functions and Research Initiatives
The envisioned foundation will function as a comprehensive centre for research, policy support, language revitalisation, digital archiving, and youth outreach. A key component is the creation of a digital-first archive that will meticulously document oral histories, family records, inscriptions, songs, rituals, photographs, manuscripts, maps, and audiovisual material. This archive aims to preserve the intangible cultural assets of the Kodava community for future generations.
Additionally, the proposal includes the formation of a community research network, engaging scholars, artists, retired officers, agriculturists, and temple custodians. This collaborative effort will foster a deeper understanding and dissemination of Kodava traditions and knowledge.
Expanded Units and Annual Events
Other planned units within the foundation encompass living culture labs in villages, a genealogy and heritage cell, a translation and publication wing, youth fellowships, a policy and advocacy desk, and a cultural entrepreneurship wing. An annual Kodava Knowledge Congress has also been proposed to serve as a platform for intellectual exchange and community engagement, further solidifying the foundation's role in cultural preservation.
Resource Mobilisation and Administrative Framework
To mobilise necessary resources, the university has suggested a government matching grant model, corporate social responsibility (CSR) outreach, diaspora campaigns, and memorial endowments. The proposal mandates audited donor reports and an online transparency dashboard to ensure accountability and public trust. The administrative structure will include key positions such as a chair professor or director, research associates, an archivist, a language officer, and a finance officer to oversee operations.
Political Support and Future Prospects
Virajpet MLA and chief minister's legal advisor Ajjikuttira S. Ponnanna has expressed individual support for the initiative, highlighting that government cooperation will be essential for successfully launching the project. This endorsement underscores the potential for collaborative efforts between educational institutions and political entities to advance cultural heritage preservation in Karnataka.
