Eminent Jadavpur University Professor Sati Chatterjee Passes Away at 91 in Kolkata
Sati Chatterjee, a distinguished former professor of English literature at Jadavpur University, passed away on Friday at her residence in Lake Gardens, Kolkata. The 91-year-old academic had been suffering from a lung infection.
Early Academic Journey and Family Background
In 1950, Chatterjee joined Presidency College to pursue her studies in English literature. She was a cherished student of renowned professors Subodh Chandra Sengupta and Taraknath Sen. Her father was a member of the Anushilan Samiti, a revolutionary organization in colonial India. She was married to the distinguished academic Bhabatosh Chatterjee.
Illustrious Teaching Career and Notable Students
Chatterjee began her teaching career at Jadavpur University in the 1960s and retired in the late 1990s. Among her many students were prominent figures such as Malini Bhattacharya and Swapan Chakraborty. Her primary academic focus was on the works of TS Eliot.
While writing a book on TS Eliot, Valerie Eliot personally handed her the poet's unpublished manuscript, a rare honor that highlighted her scholarly reputation.
Extensive Research and Scholarly Contributions
Her academic contributions extended beyond Eliot. She conducted significant research on the Rigveda and compiled a detailed work titled ‘Rabindranather Chithipatra: Nirdeshika’. According to her student Shobha Chattopadhyay, Chatterjee was actively working on Rabindranath Tagore's views on nationalism and related theories at the time of her passing.

JU professor Sonia Sahoo remarked, "Despite her age, she was very active and tech-savvy, showcasing her adaptability and enduring engagement with modern tools and methodologies.
Sati Chatterjee's passing marks the end of an era in Indian academia, leaving behind a rich legacy of literary scholarship and mentorship that inspired generations of students and scholars.
