Jadavpur University has taken swift action by forming a special investigative team to probe a serious incident of alleged moral policing that occurred on its campus. The move comes after a formal complaint was submitted by a group of women students, leading to immediate disciplinary measures against the accused.
Details of the Campus Altercation
The incident unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, November 20, 2025. According to university sources and a video that has since gone viral, four fourth-year engineering students allegedly confronted other students on the university playground. The confrontation reportedly began after the engineering students objected to students 'holding hands' and allegedly witnessing 'objectionable acts'.
The situation quickly escalated when the male students are accused of passing inappropriate and derogatory comments. The complainants stated that the accused used abusive language, questioned their character, and even made a sweeping claim that women from the arts department were of 'loose character'. They also allegedly threatened the girls 'not to cross their limits'.
Aftermath and University Response
A heated argument ensued between the two groups, which turned physical. During the scuffle, a student named Indranuj Roy was assaulted and had to be admitted to M R Bangur Hospital for treatment. Campus security personnel eventually intervened and escorted the four engineering students away from the scene.
In response to the formal complaint submitted to Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, the university administration has taken a firm stand. A four-member probe team, which includes professors and the Dean of Students, has been established. This team is tasked with reviewing all available evidence, including the viral video, and questioning witnesses who were present during the incident.
Pending the completion of the investigation, the university registrar has directed that the four accused engineering students be barred from entering the campus. Other students and security guards have further alleged that this group are 'habitual offenders' who frequently make derogatory comments and often stay on campus late into the night, ignoring requests from guards to leave.
Campus Climate and Safety Concerns
The complainants have expressed that they do not feel safe on campus as long as the accused students are present. This incident has raised significant concerns about the campus environment and the safety of students at Jadavpur University. The formation of the probe team signals the administration's commitment to addressing these serious allegations and ensuring a secure and respectful atmosphere for all its students.
