JSS University to Host Major Japan-India Academic Exchange Initiative
Mysuru is set to become a hub for international academic collaboration as JSS Science and Technology University (JSS STU) prepares to host the prestigious Japan–India academic exchange initiative, the "Wondervogel–II Program." This significant eight-day program is scheduled to commence on February 18, marking a key moment in bilateral educational cooperation.
Collaborative Framework and Participating Institutions
The program is being organized through a robust collaboration involving multiple esteemed institutions. JSS STU has partnered with Hokkaido University from Japan, along with the Central Food Technological Research Institute and the University of Mysore. This multi-institutional approach aims to leverage diverse expertise and resources.
A 35-member delegation from Japan will participate, comprising 16 students and three faculty members from Hokkaido University. This delegation reflects the program's commitment to fostering direct engagement between academic communities.
Program Objectives and Academic Focus
C Nataraju, principal and dean of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), outlined the core objectives of the initiative. He emphasized that the program is designed to promote cross-cultural learning and collaborative research through a structured series of activities.
The academic agenda includes:
- Expert lectures by leading researchers
- Hands-on laboratory exposure sessions
- Field visits to relevant sites
- Joint seminars and in-depth academic discussions
The thematic focus will center on critical global challenges, including food systems, environmental sustainability, agricultural innovations, and human health. This integrated approach aims to address complex issues through interdisciplinary research.
Nataraju also highlighted the reciprocal nature of the exchange, noting that a 10-member Indian team—consisting of seven students and three faculty members—had previously visited Japan under a similar program, establishing a foundation for ongoing collaboration.
Inauguration and Distinguished Attendees
The program will be formally inaugurated in a ceremony expected to draw notable figures. Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami, the seer of Suttur Mutt, will grace the occasion with his presence. The event will be presided over by C G Betsurmath, executive secretary of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, underscoring the institutional support for this initiative.
Several academic heads from the partner institutions are anticipated to attend, further solidifying the collaborative network and demonstrating a shared commitment to international academic exchange.
Associated International Conference on Chemistry and Food
In conjunction with the Wondervogel-II Program, the department of chemistry at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering will organize an international conference titled ‘Bridging Chemistry and Food – An Integrated Approach for a Sustainable Society.’ This conference is scheduled for February 18, aligning with the program's launch.
P Mallu, program convener and vice-principal, provided details on the conference, expecting around 250 delegates to participate. The attendees will include international participants, researchers, industry professionals, and students, creating a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange and networking.
This conference aims to explore the intersections between chemistry and food science, promoting sustainable solutions through integrated research methodologies. It represents a complementary effort to the broader goals of the Wondervogel-II Program, enhancing the overall impact of the academic activities in Mysuru.
The combined initiatives highlight JSS STU's growing role in facilitating global academic partnerships and addressing pressing societal issues through collaborative research and education.
