Jadavpur University Scraps Restructured Placement Cell Following Student Pressure
In a significant development at Jadavpur University, the administration has officially dissolved the recently reconstituted placement cell. This decision comes directly in response to mounting pressure from students who vehemently opposed the new structure that involved faculty members in the placement process.
Reversal to Previous Student-Led System
The university had initially restructured the placement cell with the explicit aim of improving placement outcomes and attracting more reputable companies for graduate recruitment. This new model integrated faculty members alongside the placement officer to streamline operations. However, Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee confirmed the dissolution, stating, "The placement cell with teachers was formed so that faculty members could help the placement officer streamline the process. But students objected to it. They want teachers as advisers only."
He further explained, "They said they would handle all the placements themselves. As they were making a fuss about it, I dissolved the cell. The earlier system will continue." This reinstatement means the university will revert to its previous framework where student placement coordinators, in collaboration with a placement officer, manage the entire recruitment process independently.
Student Concerns Over Faculty Involvement
A vocal section of students has been steadfast in demanding the continuation of the earlier system. Their primary concerns revolve around potential negative impacts on placement opportunities. One student articulated, "The involvement of faculty members in the placement cell will be detrimental for the 2027 batch as they will enforce strict CGPA and backlog criteria. There will be an impact on company line-up as the professors may lack the specific experience required to engage with corporate HRs and invite companies. Moreover, students will be excluded from decision-making."
Students argue that faculty involvement could lead to stricter academic criteria that might disadvantage some candidates and that professors might not possess the necessary corporate networking skills to effectively attract companies. They emphasize the importance of maintaining student autonomy in placement decisions to ensure a more inclusive and practical approach.
Faculty Frustration and Comparative Perspectives
On the other side, faculty members expressed frustration over the students' resistance. One teacher pointed out, "We told them that student placement coordinators would be co-opted into the cell and how the new system was more effective, but they were not ready to understand. In other institutes, such as the IITs and NITs, teachers are part of the placement cell. It is out of frustration that the faculty members resigned and the cell was dissolved."
This highlights a disconnect between student preferences and faculty intentions, with teachers advocating for a model similar to prestigious institutions like IITs and NITs, where faculty involvement is standard practice. They believed that integrating professors could enhance the placement process through better organization and academic oversight, but student opposition ultimately led to the cell's dissolution.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions in higher education regarding governance and student participation in administrative functions. As Jadavpur University moves forward, the focus will be on how the reinstated student-led system performs in attracting companies and managing placements, with potential implications for future recruitment strategies at the institution.
