IIT Madras Launches B.S. Admissions for 2026-27 Academic Year
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has officially opened applications for its undergraduate B.S. programs for the academic session 2026-2027. This initiative marks a significant opportunity for students aspiring to pursue advanced studies in specialized fields at one of India's premier institutions.
Program Details and Admission Process
The institute is offering B.S. courses in two distinct disciplines: Medical Sciences & Engineering and Chemistry. The Medical Sciences & Engineering program is designed to foster interdisciplinary learning, integrating healthcare, engineering, and research to address complex challenges in the medical field. Meanwhile, the Chemistry program provides a robust foundation in scientific principles with an option for students to upgrade to an M.S. in Chemistry, emphasizing research-based training.
Admissions to both programs will be conducted through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT-2026). Applicants must first register for IAT-2026 before proceeding to fill out the program application. It is important to note that additional admission routes, such as SEA and FACE, will be made available at a later stage, offering alternative pathways for eligible candidates.
Eligibility Criteria and Academic Requirements
To be eligible for these programs, candidates must satisfy three key conditions:
- Qualify in the IAT-2026 examination.
- Be Indian nationals or hold OCI/PIO cards issued before March 4, 2021.
- Meet the Class XII academic requirements from a recognized board under COBSE, with exams held in 2024, 2025, or 2026.
For the Medical Sciences & Engineering program, mandatory subjects include Mathematics along with two others from Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. For the Chemistry program, applicants must have studied Chemistry with two additional subjects such as Biology, Mathematics, or Physics.
Academic performance thresholds are set at a minimum of 60% marks for general category candidates and 55% for SC, ST, and PWD categories.
Application Process and Important Dates
The application window commenced on April 6, 2026, at 10:00 AM and will conclude on June 5, 2026, at 5:00 PM. Applications must be submitted exclusively online through the official portal. Candidates are required to register using their email address and mobile number, complete the application form, and pay the requisite fee.
The application fee is Rs. 500 for SC, ST, PWD, and Female category applicants, and Rs. 1000 for all other candidates. Each applicant is permitted to submit only one application.
