IIT-Kanpur Student Found Dead, Suicide Note Says 'Sorry'

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) campus was struck by tragedy on Monday when a final year student was discovered deceased in his hostel room. The incident has sent shockwaves through the prestigious institute's community.

Discovery of the Tragedy

The alarming situation came to light after the student's family, based in Ajmer, Rajasthan, grew concerned as their repeated phone calls went unanswered. Unable to reach him, they contacted a friend of the student for help.

This friend, who was on leave at the time, promptly alerted other students on campus. A group of them then went to check on the student at his hostel room. When their knocks received no response, they immediately informed the IIT-K administration.

The institute authorities, upon being notified, swiftly alerted the local police. Officers arrived at the scene and were forced to break open the hostel room door, where they found the young man's body.

Police Investigation and Suicide Note

During the initial investigation, police officials made a poignant discovery near the body. A brief suicide note was found, containing the words "sorry everyone". This has led investigators to treat the case as a suspected suicide, although the official cause of death remains under scrutiny.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) West, Kapil Dev Singh, addressed the media, stating that the exact cause of death is still unclear and awaits further investigation. The police are proceeding with their standard protocols to piece together the events leading to the student's death.

The family of the deceased is expected to arrive in Kanpur on Tuesday to complete the necessary formalities, including the postmortem procedure.

Institute's Response and Condolences

IIT-Kanpur authorities released an official statement expressing profound grief over the incident. The institute acknowledged the student as a promising individual who had joined the institute in July 2020 for his studies in biological engineering.

In their statement, the institute extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and friends. The loss of a bright, final-year student has cast a pall over the campus, prompting reflection and concern for student well-being within the high-pressure academic environment.

The incident underscores the critical importance of mental health support systems in educational institutions, especially those as demanding as the IITs.
