A promising final-year BTech student at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was found dead in his hostel room on Monday, in a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the campus community.
How the Tragic Discovery Was Made
The alarm was raised after the student's family, based in Ajmer, Rajasthan, grew concerned when repeated calls to his phone went unanswered. They contacted a friend of the student, who was on leave at the time. This friend then alerted other students on campus.
When these students went to the student's hostel room and received no response to their knocks, they immediately informed the IIT administration. The institute authorities subsequently called the police, who arrived and broke open the door to the room. Inside, they found the student deceased. A brief note was recovered, which simply read, "Sorry everyone."
Official Response and Investigation
The IIT-Kanpur administration released an official statement expressing profound sorrow over the loss. The statement identified the deceased as a promising student who had enrolled in the department of biological sciences and bioengineering in July 2020.
Additional DCP Kapil Dev Singh stated that the exact cause of death is still under investigation and remains unclear at this initial stage. The student's family is expected to arrive in Kanpur on Tuesday to complete the necessary formalities, including the postmortem procedure.
