IIT Delhi Achieves Global Milestone in QS Subject Rankings 2026
The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has secured a landmark achievement in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, with five of its engineering and technology subjects breaking into the top 50 globally. This represents a substantial improvement from the previous year, where only one subject held a top 50 position.
Top 50 Engineering Subjects at IIT Delhi
According to the rankings announced on March 25, 2026, IIT Delhi's performance is highlighted by the following subject rankings:
- Electrical Engineering: Ranked 36th globally, leading the institute's achievements.
- Mechanical Engineering: Secured the 44th position worldwide.
- Computer Science: Placed at 45th in the global rankings.
- Chemical Engineering: Achieved the 48th rank internationally.
- Civil Engineering: Entered the top 50 at the 50th position.
This collective advancement underscores IIT Delhi's commitment to academic excellence and innovation in engineering education.
Leadership Insights on Rankings Success
Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean (Planning) and Head of the Ranking Cell, commented, "IIT Delhi provides world-class and affordable education, nurturing students who become leaders across various sectors. While rankings do not capture all our activities, they serve as a recognition of our dedicated efforts."
Prof. Shankar Prakriya, Head of Electrical Engineering, noted, "The improved QS ranking for our Electrical Engineering program validates our growth path. We have accelerated progress in key areas, modernized curricula and facilities, and launched initiatives like a PG Diploma in VLSI design and a student innovation lab funded by an alumnus, emphasizing our focus on innovation and excellence."

Dr. P.M.V Subbarao, Head of Mechanical Engineering, stated, "Our enhanced ranking reflects our steadfast dedication to engineering excellence. Prof. Anurag Rathore, Head of Chemical Engineering, highlighted, "With over Rs 40 crore in industrial funding over the past five years, a 75% increase in patents granted, and a 50% rise in peer-reviewed publications, our department consistently ranks among India's most distinguished."
