IIM Nagpur Acquires Strategic Land Parcel in Mihan for Expansion
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur has taken a significant step toward expanding its infrastructure with the acquisition of a prime land parcel in the Mihan area. The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has officially allotted a 3,455.81 square metre plot, equivalent to approximately 0.85 acres, to the prestigious business school for developing an extension complex.
Details of the Allotment and Existing Structure
The allotted land is situated at Plot No. 14 in Sector 21, located outside the Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This site already features a ground-plus-four-storey building that has remained vacant for several years. The existing structure comprises around 50 rooms and a spacious dining hall, providing a solid foundation for the institute's renovation plans.
Institute officials revealed that IIM Nagpur had formally requested this land nearly a year ago to address its growing infrastructure needs. The plot has been secured on a long-term lease basis for approximately ₹12 crore, with the amount payable in instalments. The responsibility for development and utilization of the complex rests entirely with IIM Nagpur.
Official Handover Ceremony and Key Attendees
The formal allotment letter was presented to IIM Nagpur director Bhimaraya Metri by Vipin Itankar, chairman-cum-managing director of Mihan India Limited. The ceremony took place in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, highlighting the significance of this development for the region. Satyanarayan Nuwal, founder-CEO of Solar Group, also attended the event, underscoring the collaborative nature of the initiative.
Addressing Executive Education Demand
Director Bhimaraya Metri emphasized the critical need for this expansion, particularly for executive education programs. "There is an acute shortage of space for such programmes," Metri stated. "Last year, the institute generated over ₹42 crore from executive education, but we can run only three programmes at a time due to space constraints."
The additional facility is expected to significantly alleviate these limitations, allowing IIM Nagpur to expand its executive education offerings and accommodate more participants simultaneously. This move comes as demand for specialized management training continues to rise across industries.
Strategic Importance for Mihan's Development
This land allotment is poised to strengthen Mihan's position as a burgeoning hub for education, innovation, and industry collaboration. By establishing a presence in this strategic location, IIM Nagpur contributes to the area's ecosystem, potentially attracting more educational and corporate entities to the region.
The institute plans to undertake comprehensive renovations of the existing building before putting the complex into operational use. This approach allows for quicker deployment of the facility compared to constructing from scratch, enabling IIM Nagpur to meet pressing space requirements more efficiently.
This development marks a pivotal moment for IIM Nagpur's growth trajectory, providing the physical infrastructure needed to enhance its academic offerings and reinforce its standing among India's premier management institutions.
