In a significant move to modernize its academic offerings, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has given the green light to introduce two cutting-edge undergraduate programs. The university's Executive Council, in a meeting held on Monday, approved the launch of Bachelor's courses in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for its network of affiliated colleges.
New Tech-Focused Curriculum for Future Students
The decision, spearheaded by Vice Chancellor Prof Mahavir Singh, aims to equip students with skills relevant to the rapidly evolving digital economy. University officials confirmed that work is actively in progress to roll out these subjects for the upcoming 2026-27 academic session. This initiative is expected to provide Himachal Pradesh students with direct access to high-demand tech education within the state.
Executive Council's Broader Academic Reforms
The Monday meeting of the Executive Council yielded several other key decisions alongside the new UG courses. In line with University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations, the council approved the creation of a new post for an academic counsellor at the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE). This counsellor will be responsible for a range of critical functions including conducting personal contact programs, preparing study material, and evaluating assignments and projects.
Furthermore, the council gave its nod to the introduction of part-time PhD programmes across the university, offering greater flexibility for research scholars. On the staffing front, appointments were approved for one assistant professor each in the Physics department and the Electronics and Communication Engineering department, following recommendations from the Selection Committee.
Financial and Academic Endorsements
The Executive Council also ratified all recommendations presented by the university's Finance Committee and the Academic Council, ensuring a cohesive push for development across administrative and educational fronts. This multi-pronged approval signals a comprehensive upgrade phase for HPU, focusing on both curriculum expansion and institutional strengthening.
With the approval of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the undergraduate level, HPU joins a growing number of Indian universities integrating future-ready specializations into their core curriculum. This step is poised to create a local talent pool for the tech industry and open new academic avenues for students in the region.
