Himachal Pradesh Technical University Greenlights Rs 76.07 Crore Budget for 2026-27
In a major boost to technical education, the Himachal Pradesh Technical University (HPTU) in Hamirpur has officially approved an annual budget of Rs 76.07 crore for the financial year 2026-27. This significant allocation underscores the university's commitment to advancing research, innovation, and holistic student development beyond conventional teaching methods.
Budget Approval and Leadership Insights
The budget was finalized during a finance committee meeting chaired by Abhishek Jain, who serves as both the vice-chancellor and secretary of technical education. Following this meeting, the board of directors gave their formal approval, paving the way for transformative initiatives. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized that HPTU is shifting its focus from traditional pedagogy to fostering a culture of research, innovation, and co-curricular engagement among students. He highlighted that special attention will be directed toward entrepreneurship development, industrial exposure, and skill-based training, aiming to cultivate self-reliance and practical expertise in the student body.
Key Allocations and Strategic Initiatives
Abhishek Jain outlined several pivotal components of the budget designed to elevate academic and research standards:
- PhD Program Launch: The university will soon introduce PhD programs across its main campus and affiliated institutions to strengthen the research ecosystem and encourage scholarly pursuits.
- Infrastructure and Resources: For the first time, Rs 3 crore has been earmarked for modernizing laboratories and infrastructure, while Rs 1 crore is allocated for enhancing library resources, including books, e-resources, and academic journals.
- Student Development Funds: Funding for sports and cultural activities has been substantially increased from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 55 lakh, reflecting a commitment to extracurricular growth. Additional provisions support student clubs, placements, skill development, and entrepreneurship programs.
- Honorary PhD Degrees: New provisions will allow the university to award honorary PhD degrees to distinguished individuals who have made exceptional contributions in academia, research, industry, and society.
- Research Incentives: To promote active supervision, each PhD guide will receive an incentive of Rs 50,000 upon the successful completion of a scholar's research work, incentivizing mentorship and academic excellence.
