In a significant move to fill a large number of empty seats, the admission committee for diploma engineering courses in Gujarat has launched a second-round admission process. This follows the recent directive from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to conduct admissions twice a year.
Massive Vacancies Prompt Second Chance
After the conclusion of the first round of admissions, a staggering more than 30,000 diploma engineering seats were left unfilled across the state. To address this gap and provide students with another opportunity, the committee has initiated a fresh admission drive. The entire process must be completed by January 19.
Admissions in this second phase will be conducted strictly for branches where more than 30% of the seats are currently vacant. This rule applies to both government and self-financed institutions, ensuring that the process targets programs with genuine availability.
Separate Processes for Government and Self-Financed Colleges
The admission procedure differs based on the type of college. For government diploma engineering colleges, a total of 1,134 seats are up for grabs. Interested candidates must register with their original documents by January 10.
The merit list will be published on January 13. Subsequently, shortlisted students will be required to attend in-person counselling at the admission committee office, which will continue until January 17.
For self-financed diploma colleges, the scale is much larger, with 17,582 vacant seats available in this second phase. Here, students need to approach the colleges directly for admission instead of going through a centralised committee.
Branch-Wise Vacancy Data Reveals Key Trends
The admission committee has urged students to carefully review the published data on college-wise and branch-wise vacancies before making a decision. An analysis of the self-financed colleges shows significant openings in several popular streams:
- Computer Engineering: 4,193 seats
- Mechanical Engineering: 2,881 seats
- Civil Engineering: 2,375 seats
- Electrical Engineering: 2,073 seats
- Information and Communication Technology-related branches
Sources within the committee clarified that self-financed colleges have the authority to fill all their vacant seats directly. However, there is a nuance: self-financed colleges affiliated with Gujarat Technological University (GTU) must adhere to the 30% vacancy rule for offering admissions. Colleges not affiliated with GTU enjoy more flexibility and can admit students at their own discretion.
A Strategic Move to Optimize Enrollment
This second-round admission drive is a strategic response to the AICTE's new biannual admission policy. The primary goals are to drastically reduce large-scale vacancies in diploma engineering programs and to offer a valuable second chance to students who may have missed the first round or are reconsidering their options after Class 10.
By providing a structured window for admissions until mid-January, the education authorities in Gujarat aim to better utilize educational infrastructure and meet the demand for technical skills at the diploma level.
