Gujarat University Implements New Safety Directive for Female Students
In a significant move to address student safety concerns, Gujarat University (GU) in Ahmedabad has issued a new directive making it mandatory to depute a female staff member, professor, or coach to accompany female students travelling for sporting events, seminars, or any official university activity. This decision comes in response to sharp criticism over the university's handling of a recent incident involving a women's wrestling team.
Controversy Sparks Policy Change
The controversy erupted after it was revealed that a 20-member women's wrestling team from GU was sent to Kurukshetra University for the All India Inter-University Women's Freestyle Wrestling Championship without any female supervision. Instead, the team was accompanied by a peon, despite the university having deputed a professor for the role. This absence of a qualified female representative raised serious concerns about student safety and established protocols.
Public criticism mounted, with the Youth Congress submitting a memorandum highlighting the lapse and demanding accountability. The backlash prompted GU to announce the new directive, which stipulates that no all-women contingent will be permitted to travel for official engagements unless accompanied by at least one female representative from the university staff or faculty.
University's Response and Ongoing Issues
University officials have not provided an explanation for why a female staff member was not included in the original delegation or why a temporary employee with no coaching credentials was appointed as the team manager for a national-level championship. Sources indicate that while GU is attempting to resolve the issue through policy changes, there appears to be little intention of taking action against those responsible for the lapse.
This new policy aims to prevent similar incidents in the future by ensuring that female students have proper supervision and support during official trips. However, questions remain about the university's commitment to accountability and the effectiveness of these measures in safeguarding student welfare.
