Gujarat University Hostel Students Grapple with Severe Water Shortage and Poor Conditions
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has leveled serious allegations against Gujarat University (GU) regarding the deplorable living conditions in its hostels. On Thursday, the prominent students' body asserted that residents are being systematically deprived of essential basic facilities, leading to significant hardships in their daily lives.
Inadequate Water Supply and Sanitation Issues Highlighted
According to the ABVP's detailed complaint, the water supply within the hostel premises is critically inadequate, creating a cascade of problems for the student residents. The organization emphasized that sanitation standards have plummeted to unacceptable levels, while overall living conditions have become increasingly unsafe and unhygienic.
One of the most pressing concerns raised is the acute shortage of drinking water. Students are reportedly forced to endure long, tedious queues just to access potable water, severely disrupting their academic schedules and daily routines. This logistical nightmare not only wastes valuable study time but also adds unnecessary stress to their campus experience.
Furthermore, the ABVP has alleged that the water supply for essential activities like bathing and washing clothes is also insufficient. This dual deficiency in both drinking and utility water compromises personal hygiene and creates an environment conducive to health risks, especially as summer temperatures begin to rise.
University's Response and Temporary Measures
In a related development, the university administration restored water supply to the boys' hostel on Thursday evening. Officials clarified that the supply had been intentionally disrupted for a period of two days to facilitate urgent and necessary repairs to the borewell system.
Anticipating the challenges posed by the impending summer season, Gujarat University has implemented interim relief measures. The institution has arranged for 20-litre bottles of RO (Reverse Osmosis) purified water to be supplied to students residing in Blocks B and D of the hostel. This temporary solution is intended to bridge the gap until the permanent water coolers become fully operational and functional again.
The situation underscores a broader issue of infrastructure maintenance and student welfare within university accommodations. While the immediate repair work addresses the technical fault, the ABVP's allegations point to systemic failures in ensuring consistent access to fundamental amenities. The student body's outcry calls for a more robust and reliable framework to prevent such crises from recurring, safeguarding the well-being and academic focus of the hostel residents.
