DAVV Indore Announces Historic Shift to Entrance-Based PG Admissions
In a landmark development for higher education in Madhya Pradesh, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) in Indore will implement entrance examinations for admission to its traditional postgraduate programmes for the first time. This significant policy change marks a major transformation in the state's academic admission procedures, aligning with broader educational reforms.
Implementation Timeline and Examination Details
The new entrance-based admission system will become operational from the 2026–27 academic session under the framework established by the National Education Policy (NEP). University officials have indicated that the entrance examination is tentatively scheduled for the final week of March or the initial week of April. The application process will commence in the second week of February, with special application windows on February 6 and 7 designated for students seeking to modify their faculty, major, or minor subjects during the transition to postgraduate studies.
Policy Background and Administrative Directives
This transformative move follows a directive from the Madhya Pradesh higher education department mandating national or state-level entrance tests for postgraduate admissions across all state universities. DAVV has taken proactive steps by initiating the process and issuing an official notification regarding the implementation of entrance examinations. The responsibility for conducting these examinations has been delegated to individual state universities as part of this comprehensive policy overhaul.
Enhanced Academic Flexibility Under New System
The revised admission framework introduces substantial academic flexibility for students, in accordance with NEP provisions that promote multidisciplinary learning. Under the new rules, graduates with Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degrees can now opt for Master of Arts (MA) programmes, while students with Bachelor of Arts (BA) or BSc backgrounds may seek admission to Master of Commerce (MCom) courses. The system also permits changes in major and minor subjects, facilitating greater interdisciplinary exploration.
Admission Process and Evaluation Methodology
DAVV Controller of Examinations Ashesh Tiwari has clarified that the admission process will involve a two-stage evaluation. Candidates will first undertake a written entrance examination, followed by an interview. Final admissions will be granted based on combined performance in both assessment stages. However, students continuing within the same faculty and subject stream will be exempt from the entrance examination requirement and may apply directly for admission, maintaining continuity for those pursuing advanced studies in their existing disciplines.
Transition from Previous Admission Procedures
Previously, students seeking faculty changes had to declare their intentions on the admission portal, after which departments prepared interview lists and forwarded them to universities. Eligibility determinations were made exclusively through interviews, followed by seat allotment. This decentralized procedure has now been replaced by a uniform entrance-based system designed to standardize evaluation criteria and enhance transparency across the admission process.
The implementation of entrance examinations at DAVV represents a significant step toward modernizing postgraduate admissions in Madhya Pradesh, creating a more structured and equitable system that aligns with national educational priorities while offering students greater academic mobility and interdisciplinary opportunities.
