Central University of South Bihar to Introduce Four-Year Integrated Teacher Education Programs
The Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) in Patna is poised to launch innovative four-year integrated BA BEd and BSc BEd programs, commencing from the academic session 2026-27. These programs fall under the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), an initiative spearheaded by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), which has already granted the necessary permissions for implementation.
Admission Process and Seat Allocation
Admissions to these programs will not be conducted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate courses. Instead, they will be managed via a separate examination known as the National Common Entrance Test (NCET). This test will be administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). According to Kumar Kaushal, CUSB's deputy registrar, each stream—BA BEd and BSc BEd—will have 50 sanctioned seats, ensuring a focused and quality-driven intake.
Alignment with National Education Policy 2020
The adoption of ITEP by CUSB is a strategic move in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the curriculum framework issued by the NCTE. This integration underscores the university's commitment to enhancing teacher education standards in India. The program will operate within a multidisciplinary framework, fostering collaboration among various departments of the university to provide a holistic educational experience.
Curriculum Structure and Pedagogical Focus
Under this framework, the department of teacher education at CUSB will primarily handle pedagogy and foundational components, ensuring that prospective teachers receive robust training in teaching methodologies. Meanwhile, liberal and interdisciplinary courses will be offered jointly by relevant departments and the teacher education department. This collaborative approach aims to blend subject-specific knowledge with essential teaching skills, preparing educators for diverse classroom environments.
Vision and Impact of the Integrated Program
Mudassir Alam, CUSB's public relations officer, emphasized that the four-year ITEP is designed to create professionally trained and well-equipped teachers. These educators will be capable of designing and implementing developmentally appropriate learning experiences for students across different stages of school education. The program seeks to ensure that future teachers receive the highest quality education in content, pedagogy, values, and practical application, thereby elevating the overall standard of teaching in India.
By 2030, the four-year integrated BEd degree is set to become the minimal qualification requirement for school teachers, as highlighted by university officials. This move aligns with broader educational reforms aimed at professionalizing the teaching profession and improving learning outcomes nationwide.
