Cusat Faces Severe Hostel Shortage, 45% of Outstation Students Affected
Cusat Hostel Crisis: 45% Students Without On-Campus Rooms

Cusat Grapples with Acute Hostel Shortage, Impacting Nearly Half of Outstation Students

Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), a premier public university in Kerala, is confronting a critical shortage of hostel facilities, compelling approximately 45% of its outstation student population to seek accommodation off-campus. This pressing issue has emerged as a significant challenge for the institution, affecting academic and financial well-being.

Alarming Statistics Reveal Widespread Accommodation Gap

According to the latest data provided by the university, only about 55% of students who applied for hostel rooms secured on-campus accommodation for the 2024-25 academic year. Specifically, out of 3,984 applications submitted until November 2025, merely 2,214 students were admitted to hostels, leaving close to 1,800 dependent on private hostels or rented rooms in nearby areas.

The selection process for hostel eligibility primarily hinges on the distance of a student's permanent residence from the campus and their seniority. For instance, a second-year student typically has a higher chance of allocation compared to a fresher, assuming they applied during their first year and were initially denied. However, even this priority system does not guarantee accommodation, highlighting the severity of the crunch.

Gender-Wise Breakdown Shows Equal Impact Across Hostels

A detailed gender-wise analysis underscores the extent of the shortage. Among 2,104 male applicants, only 1,162 were allotted rooms, while of 1,880 female applicants, just 1,052 received accommodation. This data clearly indicates that the crisis affects both boys' and girls' hostels almost equally, exacerbating the overall housing dilemma.

Cusat currently hosts over 8,000 students across various programs on its campus. In 2022, the university attempted to alleviate pressure by commissioning Sahrudaya, a new hostel for male students. Despite this effort, the problem persisted due to the introduction of five new courses across disciplines, which led to an increased student intake without a corresponding expansion in residential infrastructure.

Student Voices Highlight Financial and Emotional Distress

The hostel shortage has placed a heavy financial burden on many students, particularly those from economically weaker sections. A first-year student from Palakkad shared, "My father was unwell for a long period after an accident, and our family survives on my mother's earnings. I joined the university hoping to complete my education with reduced expenses, but staying in a private hostel placed an extra financial burden on my family."

Rituparna J B, the recently elected students' union chairman from Kozhikode, who resides in private accommodation outside the campus, emphasized the distress caused by the situation. "We will be submitting an urgent request seeking university intervention," Rituparna stated, reflecting the collective concern among the student body.

University Officials Acknowledge Constraints and Propose Solutions

University officials have acknowledged that despite efforts to optimize existing infrastructure, a significant number of students remain without on-campus accommodation due to space constraints. A senior official revealed that proposals have been submitted to both the state government and the University Grants Commission (UGC), seeking approval for the construction of additional hostels.

"Construction of a foreign students' hostel and a girls' hostel will begin shortly," the official announced, indicating potential relief in the near future. Currently, Cusat operates 15 hostels in total, comprising eight boys' hostels, six girls' hostels, and one foreign students' hostel.

This ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for enhanced residential facilities to support the growing student population and ensure equitable access to education at one of Kerala's leading institutions.
