A tragic incident unfolded in Kanpur on Saturday morning when a 27-year-old Ayurvedic medicine student ended his life in his private hostel room. The young man, identified as Shailendra Kumar, was found hanging from a ceiling fan.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The incident occurred in the Bagdaudhi Bangar area under the Bithoor police station limits. Shailendra Kumar, a resident of Karwi in Chitrakoot, was a third-year BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) student at Rama University in Mandhana. He used a nylon rope to hang himself from the ceiling fan in his room.
Police were alerted via the emergency number 112. Upon receiving the information, a team from the Bithoor police station along with forensic experts rushed to the spot. The authorities then informed the student's family members about the devastating news.
Academic Pressure and Backlogs Cited as Probable Cause
Initial investigations and accounts from fellow students point towards severe academic pressure as a likely trigger. Students living in nearby rooms revealed that Shailendra Kumar had a backlog in some papers, which had caused him significant stress.
ACP (Kalyanpur) Ashutosh Kumar provided further distressing details. He stated that the student was "quite troubled due to failing twice in exams" and had even left home once before due to the pressure. According to his friends, he was absent for one paper in the previous semester, which resulted in another academic backlog. The cumulative stress from these repeated setbacks is believed to have led him to take this extreme step.
Police Investigation and Aftermath
After a thorough investigation at the scene, the police took the body into their custody. It was subsequently sent for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The police are continuing their investigation into the matter, piecing together the final hours and circumstances leading to the suicide.
This incident has once again cast a spotlight on the immense pressure faced by students in professional courses, where academic backlogs and the fear of failure can lead to severe mental health crises. The loss of Shailendra Kumar has sent a wave of grief through his university and hometown community.
