Historic AR Centre at University College Set for Inauguration After Major Renovation

The historic AR Centre, also known as the Oriental Block, at University College in Thiruvananthapuram is poised for a grand reopening following an extensive renovation project. Higher Education Minister R Bindu will officially inaugurate the building on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the preservation of Kerala's educational heritage.

A Tribute to A R Rajarajavarma

Named in honor of A R Rajarajavarma, the first Malayali principal of University College and head of its Malayalam and Sanskrit departments, this building complex holds a special place in the institution's history. During his tenure as superintendent of local language, Rajarajavarma identified a critical gap in Malayalam literature—the absence of comprehensive ornamental and metrical treatises. In response, he prepared detailed class notes for students, which later evolved into seminal works such as Bhashabhushanam and Vrithamanjari. These contributions cemented his legacy as a pioneering figure in Malayalam linguistics and education.

A Hub of Literary and Cultural Significance

The AR Centre is not merely a building; it is a repository of linguistic, literary, and historical importance. Over the years, it has been associated with numerous luminaries in Malayalam literature and culture. Key figures who have been part of this institution include:

Renovation and Preservation Efforts

Over time, the AR Centre had deteriorated significantly, raising concerns about the loss of this heritage monument. To address this, the government allocated funds through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), investing Rs 3.5 crore in a comprehensive renovation project. This initiative aimed to restore the building to its former glory while ensuring it meets modern educational needs. The renovation has successfully preserved the architectural and historical integrity of the centre, safeguarding it for future generations.

Current and Future Use

Today, the revitalized AR Centre serves as a functional academic space, housing classrooms for the Malayalam, Hindi, and Sanskrit departments. It also accommodates the library for the Malayalam department, providing students and scholars with access to valuable resources. This blend of historical preservation and contemporary utility underscores the building's ongoing relevance in the academic landscape of Kerala.

The inauguration by Minister R Bindu not only celebrates the completion of this renovation but also reaffirms the state's commitment to honoring its rich cultural and educational heritage. As the AR Centre reopens its doors, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of A R Rajarajavarma and the many intellectuals who have contributed to Malayalam literature and culture.
