In a remarkable testament to lifelong learning, a 97-year-old alumnus of Nagpur University is poised to enter the record books. Vinayak Pande is set to become the oldest recipient of a prestigious Doctor of Literature (DLitt) degree in India.
A Historic Convocation Honour
The historic moment will occur during the university's 113th convocation ceremony on January 9. The university has cleared Pande for the DLitt in economics, a decision based on his profound thesis. This achievement places him within an exceptionally rare group of scholars worldwide who have been honoured at such an advanced age.
The Scholar and His Work
Vinayak Pande, who currently resides in Bengaluru, conducted research on a topic of immense global significance. His thesis, titled 'Global Economic Recession', demonstrated academic rigour and contemporary relevance, earning him the highest academic accolade.
However, the nonagenarian scholar will be unable to attend the convocation in person. Doctors have advised him against travelling from Bengaluru to Nagpur for health reasons. Sharing his doctors' lighthearted yet firm counsel, Pande told the Times of India, "They jokingly told me, 'if you want to stay alive, don't travel'."

Despite the physical distance, Pande's spirit embodies the very essence of scholarly pursuit. He firmly holds a philosophy that has clearly guided his journey. "I have always believed research has no retirement age," he stated. This conviction has driven him to contribute to the field of economics well into his tenth decade, inspiring students and academics alike.
