In a significant development, Toronto Police have announced the arrest of a 28-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting last month that claimed the life of 20-year-old Indian student Shivank Avasthi on the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. The suspect, identified as Babatunde Afuwape of Toronto, now faces a charge of first-degree murder.
Details of the Arrest and the Charges
Police confirmed that Babatunde Afuwape was taken into custody and formally charged with first-degree murder for the death of Shivank Avasthi. Investigators revealed a chilling detail: they do not believe the killer knew Avasthi. According to Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe, the shooting appears to have been a random act of violence. "We believe he was there to kill somebody. How he chose that person, I don’t know," McCabe stated, indicating that the young student was tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The incident occurred on December 23, 2025, in an area of the campus popularly known as the 'valley,' a trail frequented by students, staff, and local community members. Detective McCabe acknowledged the fear the event sparked, saying, "We recognize that this incident caused a great deal of fear and concern... particularly those who use this trail." She sought to reassure the public by confirming, "We do want to reassure the community that the person responsible is in custody."
Suspect Was on Parole, Victim Was a Promising Student
In a troubling revelation, police disclosed that the accused, Babatunde Afuwape, was on parole for firearms offences at the time of the shooting. He was initially taken into custody for violating his parole conditions before being charged with murder. Investigators noted that Afuwape was on campus for approximately an hour before the incident and was not a student at the university.
The victim, Shivank Avasthi, was a third-year international student from India. Remembering him, Detective McCabe said, "He was young, bright and had his whole life ahead of him. Our thoughts remain with his family, friends, and classmates, and everyone affected by his loss."
International Response and Ongoing Investigation
The tragic death sent shockwaves through the Indian community in Canada and back home. Following the incident, the Indian embassy expressed "deep anguish" over the loss. In a statement, the embassy said, "We express deep anguish over the tragic death of a young Indian doctoral student, Mr Shivank Avasthi... The Consulate is in touch with the bereaved family during this difficult time, and is extending all necessary assistance in close coordination with the local authorities."
While a suspect is in custody, the investigation remains active as police continue to work on establishing a clear motive for the seemingly random attack. The arrest brings a measure of closure to a case that highlighted concerns about campus safety and violent crime.
