Uttar Pradesh Launches Pioneering Art Education Textbook 'Bansuri' for Primary Students
In a landmark educational initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced the introduction of a dedicated art education textbook titled "Bansuri" for students in Classes III and IV across all government primary schools. This pioneering move marks the first time that council-run schools in the state will have a prescribed textbook for art and music education, replacing the previous system where teachers relied solely on their own methods for instruction and assessment.
Structured Curriculum with Comprehensive Components
Developed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in alignment with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education, the "Bansuri" textbook establishes a minimum of 100 hours of structured art education throughout the academic year. The curriculum thoughtfully integrates four major artistic domains:
- Visual Arts including drawing, painting, and crafts
- Music with rhythm exercises and multilingual songs
- Dance and body movement activities
- Theatre incorporating acting and stagecraft
The Class III edition consists of 20 comprehensive chapters, each enhanced with embedded QR codes that provide students with direct access to supplementary digital learning materials, creating a blended educational experience.
Enhanced Learning Through Practical Engagement
To further enrich the educational experience, schools will invite expert artists and practitioners from various disciplines to conduct special sessions during the academic year. Students will be actively encouraged to create original artworks and participate in hands-on activities, with dedicated provisions for displaying their creative work both within school campuses and at public exhibitions.
Rajendra Pratap, Principal of the State Council of Educational Research and Training Uttar Pradesh, emphasized the textbook's broader educational objectives. "The activities incorporated in 'Bansuri' are specifically designed to enhance expression skills, promote communal harmony, and create awareness about preserving our rich cultural heritage," he explained. "This structured curriculum will help develop critical thinking, foster teamwork, and improve both reading and writing abilities among young learners."
Detailed Implementation Framework
The syllabus allocates 20 hours each to visual arts, music, dance, and theatre, with an additional 20 hours dedicated to experiential activities. Art teachers will conduct four regular classes per week along with an additional Saturday session to ensure comprehensive coverage of the curriculum.
Student performance will be evaluated across five distinct categories labeled A through E, representing achievement levels from excellent to beginner. The visual arts component includes practical activities like drawing, painting, cutting, and pasting, helping children understand various materials including clay, colors, and natural elements.
Music lessons will focus on fundamental concepts like rhythm, clapping exercises, and songs in multiple languages, while theatre education introduces students to basic acting techniques, stagecraft fundamentals, and the creative use of props.
Educator Perspectives and Innovative Approaches
Reena Mishra, a state award-winning teacher, praised the textbook as both engaging and practical. "'Bansuri' introduces innovative concepts like using a traditional clay pot as a musical instrument, known as 'ghatam,' alongside creative exercises such as making masks, lanterns, and paper jewelry," she noted. "This represents a significant advancement in making art education more structured, accessible, and meaningful for young students across Uttar Pradesh."
This comprehensive initiative represents a substantial shift toward experiential and structured learning in government primary schools, potentially serving as a model for other states seeking to enhance their art education frameworks. The integration of traditional artistic practices with modern educational technology through QR codes creates a unique learning environment that honors cultural heritage while embracing contemporary teaching methodologies.
