UP Winter Session: Govt to Soon Decide on Shiksha Mitra Pay Hike, Announces Cashless Treatment
UP Govt to Decide on Shiksha Mitra Honorarium Hike Soon

The Winter Session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council commenced in Lucknow with a sharp focus on the state's education sector, witnessing significant announcements from the government and heated debates from the opposition.

Focus on Shiksha Mitras and Teacher Welfare

Responding to a question raised by Samajwadi Party member Ashutosh Sinha, the Minister of State for Basic Education (Independent Charge), Sandeep Singh, provided a crucial update. He stated that the government is actively working on the matter of increasing the honorarium for Shiksha Mitras and will soon present a proposal before the cabinet. Once approved, the details of the decision will be laid before the legislative house.

Earlier, Sinha had highlighted the plight of Shiksha Mitras, alleging that the meager honorarium they receive has led to severe hardships. He made a grave claim that more than 8,000 Shiksha Mitras have either died or ended their lives due to the financial strain associated with their roles.

Cashless Treatment and University Appointment Probe

In a major welfare announcement, the government confirmed the rollout of a cashless treatment facility for unfunded teachers, Shiksha Mitras, and instructors. Leader of the House, Keshav Prasad Maurya, reminded the council that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced this initiative on September 5, 2025. A substantial budget of Rs 80.25 crore has been allocated specifically for this healthcare scheme.

The session also saw allegations of malpractice in higher education. BJP member Devendra Pratap Singh raised the issue of alleged irregularities in appointments at Siddharth Vishwavidyalaya in Kapilvastu. He specifically sought details of recruitments in the psychology department, claiming to have definite information about fraud. "Appointments have been made by taking money. Reservation rules have not been followed. Unqualified people have been recruited," he alleged. In response, Maurya assured the House that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

Opposition Walkout Over Education Issues

Expressing dissatisfaction with the government's responses, Samajwadi Party members staged a walkout during the Zero Hour. Their protest was against the government's replies to several charges they raised concerning ongoing irregularities within the state's education sector. This move underscored the tense atmosphere and the opposition's demand for more concrete action and accountability.

The first day of the session thus set the tone for discussions on governance, welfare, and accountability, with education emerging as the central theme.
