Tamil Nadu Teacher Arrested Under POCSO Act for Harassing Female Students
In a disturbing incident from Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu, a government school teacher was arrested on Thursday under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused, identified as Senthil, allegedly sexually harassed female students at a panchayat union middle school near Tiruchengode.

Senthil had joined the school approximately six months ago after being transferred from the Sullipalayam government school. Notably, he holds the position of state general secretary of the Graduate Teachers Association, adding a layer of institutional concern to the case.

Headmistress Shanthi escalated the matter by making a verbal complaint to Lathipalayam regional education officer Valarmathi. Additionally, she alerted Child Welfare Committee chairman advocate Balasubramaniam, who conducted a separate inquiry with the minor students to verify the allegations.
Based on the findings from these internal investigations, the School Education Department took disciplinary action by placing Senthil under suspension on March 6. However, at this stage, no formal police complaint was filed, leaving the legal process incomplete.
External Pressure and Police Intervention
The situation gained momentum when the Namakkal district unit of the Students Federation of India intervened. They submitted a formal complaint to education department officials, demanding that a police case be registered immediately. The federation also urged authorities to provide mental health support and protection for the affected students, highlighting the need for comprehensive care beyond legal action.
This external pressure proved pivotal. Following a complaint lodged by Namakkal district child protection officer Nalini, the Tiruchengode all-woman police station registered a case under the POCSO Act. The police acted swiftly, arresting Senthil on Thursday.
