A devastating accident at a private maritime college in Maval taluka, Pune, has resulted in the untimely death of a 20-year-old student. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when the victim, identified as Vishal Verma, was exercising on a basketball court and the metal ring of the basket gave way, leading to a fatal collapse.

According to the Talegaon MIDC police, the tragedy unfolded around 7:30 AM on the college premises. Vishal Verma was reportedly clasping the metal ring of the basketball hoop for exercise when it suddenly gave way. The entire post of the basket collapsed on him, causing severe head injuries that cracked his skull.

Other students and college authorities immediately rushed Verma to Talegaon General Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries during the course of treatment. Verma, a resident of the college hostel, originally hailed from Uttar Pradesh.

Police Investigation and College Response

Police Sub-Inspector Prashant Relekar of the Talegaon MIDC police station stated that initial reports from the college authorities indicated the basketball post could not sustain the load during Verma's exercise routine. "We have registered a case of accidental death. Our investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and any potential negligence," the officer confirmed.

The college has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, but sources indicate that internal reviews of campus safety protocols are likely to follow.
