Uttarakhand Student Conclave Warns Against NEP 2020's Privatization and Environmental Risks
In Dehradun, the first statewide student conclave organized by the All India Democratic Students Union on Monday brought critical attention to the escalating privatization and commercialisation of education. Hundreds of students from across Uttarakhand gathered for the event, which also honored freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru.
Academicians Highlight Risks of School Closures Under NEP 2020
Academicians and educationists at the conclave expressed deep concerns about policy measures under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, particularly the closure and merger of schools. They warned that these actions could severely weaken community cohesion and social interaction. Schools often serve as essential social and cultural hubs, and their consolidation could negatively impact not only students but also parents, teachers, and local communities.
SP Semwal, former additional director of the education department in Kumaon, emphasized, "Reduced access to neighbourhood schools may deepen inequalities in education, particularly in hilly regions where distance and terrain already pose significant challenges."
Environmental Concerns Linked to Educational Reforms
Experts at the event also raised pressing environmental issues, noting the impact of rapid urbanisation near ecologically sensitive zones such as the Himalayas and the Western Ghats. They stressed the urgent need for greater awareness and collective action to address environmental degradation alongside educational reforms.
Veteran environmentalist Ravi Chopra stated, "It is time that the youth of this nation collectively come out against oligarchy to ensure that the natural resources of our country remain with its people. The Kancha Gachibowli forest of Hyderabad and the Aravalli case indicate that people have now started opposing injustice and are being heard."
Call for Stronger Public Investment and Student Engagement
Participants unanimously called for increased public investment in education and urged students to actively engage with issues affecting both the education system and the environment. The conclave served as a platform for fostering dialogue and mobilizing youth action against policies perceived as detrimental to educational equity and environmental sustainability.
The event underscored a growing movement among students and academics to advocate for reforms that prioritize community needs and ecological preservation over commercial interests.
