Vadodara Engineering Student Overcomes Stage IV Lymphoma to Achieve Top GATE 2026 Ranks

In an inspiring tale of human spirit and academic excellence, Gurudutt Dave, a 22-year-old final-year engineering student at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) in Vadodara, has defied immense physical and emotional challenges to secure remarkable ranks in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026. Despite battling stage IV lymphoma and enduring rigorous chemotherapy treatments, Dave achieved an All India Rank (AIR) of 75 in electronics and AIR 333 in electrical engineering.

A Sudden Diagnosis and Grueling Treatment Journey

Dave's health struggles began in March 2024 when he experienced persistent back pain and swelling, leading to a diagnosis of stage IV lymphoma. He immediately commenced treatment at Muni Seva Ashram in Goraj, undergoing six intensive chemotherapy cycles over a period of approximately three to three-and-a-half months. The treatment was physically exhausting, with Dave describing the first week after each session as extremely difficult, often confining him to bed rest.

"The first week after every session was extremely difficult, and I was mostly on bed rest. I would study gradually once I started recovering," Dave recounted, highlighting his determination to continue his academic pursuits even during recovery phases.

Academic Persistence Amid Personal Adversity

Dave's academic journey was already marked by resilience before his diagnosis. He faced setbacks during his engineering studies, including being detained due to backlogs while transitioning from his second to third year. Undeterred, he persisted and first attempted the GATE exam in 2025, securing AIR 1,334 in electrical engineering. Dissatisfied with this result, he decided to reappear in 2026, this time opting for a dual-paper strategy by taking both electronics and electrical engineering exams.

This strategic move proved highly successful, yielding top ranks in both disciplines. Dave attributes his success to unwavering support from mentors, friends, and family. He specifically mentioned the motivation and guidance provided by his mentor, Mrunal sir, who played a crucial role in keeping him focused during the challenging period.

Humble Background and Future Aspirations

Coming from a modest family background, with his retired father employed in a non-technical role at MSU, Dave's achievements are even more commendable. His success has opened doors to prestigious opportunities, and he now plans to pursue higher studies at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. While he expresses a strong inclination towards research, Dave acknowledges that his long-term career plans will evolve with experience and further exploration of his interests.

Reflecting on his arduous journey, Dave shared a profound insight: "The setbacks pushed me to stay focused." This statement encapsulates the mindset that enabled him to transform personal adversity into academic triumph, serving as an inspiration to students and individuals facing similar challenges across the nation.

Dave's story is not just about academic rankings; it is a powerful narrative of courage, perseverance, and the human capacity to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. His achievement underscores the importance of support systems, mental fortitude, and strategic planning in achieving one's goals, regardless of the circumstances.
