Ranchi Schools Shut Till Jan 10 Amid IMD Cold Wave Alert; 13 Districts Affected
Ranchi schools closed till Jan 10 due to cold wave

In response to a severe cold wave alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the district administration in Ranchi, Jharkhand, has ordered the closure of all schools until January 10. The decision, announced on Thursday, prioritizes the health and safety of students as minimum temperatures plunge across the state.

Administrative Order and Affected Districts

The official order mandates the shutdown of all educational institutions from KG to Class 12. This directive applies uniformly to government, private, aided, non-aided, and minority schools operating within the Ranchi district. Initially, the closure was set until January 8 but has now been extended for two additional days.

The IMD has issued a "yellow alert" for a cold wave in 13 districts of Jharkhand, effective until 8:30 AM on Friday. The districts under alert include Ranchi, Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Hazaribag, Latehar, Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Gumla, Khunti, Simdega, and West Singhbhum.

Meteorological Conditions and Temperature Plunge

According to Abhishek Anand, Deputy Director at the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, the cold spell is being driven by north-westerly winds in the lower tropospheric level over Jharkhand. "The minimum temperature is likely to remain unchanged for the next two days," Anand stated, adding that a rise of up to 3 degrees Celsius is possible over the subsequent three days.

The state witnessed a sharp dip in nighttime temperatures. Hazaribag recorded the lowest temperature at 2.9 degrees Celsius. Other severely affected areas included Khunti (3.2°C), Daltonganj (3.4°C), and Lohardaga (3.6°C). The state capital, Ranchi, registered a minimum of 8 degrees Celsius, while Bokaro and Chaibasa saw lows of 6.4°C and 6.5°C, respectively.

Extended Alert and Precautionary Measures

The meteorological centre has also issued a fresh cold wave alert for nine districts—Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Latehar, Hazaribag, Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Bokaro, and Gumla—from 8:30 AM on Friday to the same time on Saturday. The district administration's proactive measure to extend school holidays underscores the severity of the prevailing weather conditions and aims to protect young children from exposure to the harsh cold and associated health risks.

The widespread school closure is a significant administrative step impacting lakhs of students and highlights the immediate response to weather warnings in the region. Residents are advised to stay updated on further IMD alerts and take necessary precautions against the cold wave.
