Rajasthan Government Teachers Raise Concerns Over July Admissions and Revised Academic Calendar

In Jaipur, as the new academic session commences in government schools this Wednesday, educators have voiced strong objections to the policy of keeping student admissions open until July. The revised academic calendar for the 2026-27 session introduces a unit test in May prior to the summer vacation, a move that has sparked debate among teaching staff.

Learning Gap Fears with Late Admissions

Teachers argue that students enrolling as late as July would miss approximately three months of classroom instruction, creating a significant challenge in bridging the learning gap. This concern is particularly acute for higher classes, where the curriculum is more intensive.

Vipin Prakash Sharma, state president of the Rajasthan Primary and Secondary Teachers Association, questioned the logic behind this policy: "The rationale behind keeping admissions open till July 11 for classes 9-12, despite starting the new academic session on April 1, remains incomprehensible. How and when is the teacher expected to initiate and complete a three-month curriculum for students, specifically those admitted on April 1 versus those admitted on July 11?"

Revised Academic Calendar and Assessment Schedule

According to the newly released academic calendar, the first assessment will be conducted from May 13 to 15 across all government schools, followed by a second assessment from August 17 to 19. Summer vacation is scheduled from May 17 until June 20, marking a reduction of 10 days compared to previous years—a change that has also faced opposition from various teachers' associations in the state.

This year, in an effort to boost enrollment, the state government aligned the academic session with private schools by starting it on April 1. Additionally, the education department is implementing a door-to-door survey in four phases to identify and enroll school-age children.

Admission Deadlines and Ongoing Concerns

The final deadline for admissions in classes 9 through 12 is set for July 11, 2026, while admissions for classes 1 to 8 will remain open throughout the entire session. This staggered approach has raised questions about equity and educational continuity.

Teachers emphasize that the compressed timeline, combined with late admissions, could undermine the quality of education and place undue pressure on both students and educators. The reduction in summer vacation days further compounds these challenges, limiting time for curriculum planning and student support.

As the new session unfolds, the Rajasthan government faces mounting calls to reconsider these policies to ensure a more cohesive and effective academic environment for all stakeholders involved.
