Rajasthan Education Department Implements Strict Action Against Neerja Modi School
The Rajasthan education department has issued a significant order suspending academic operations at Jaipur's Neerja Modi School. This directive specifically halts Class 11 admissions for two consecutive academic sessions (2026-27 and 2027-28) and Class 12 admissions for one academic session (2027-28).
Background and Rationale for the Suspension
The department's decision, dated March 18 but revealed publicly on Friday, stems from the tragic death of a nine-year-old student at the institution in November last year. According to official statements, the school administration failed to comply with established departmental regulations and CBSE bylaws.
"The school was not being run in accordance with required standards," stated the order, which cites Rule 7 of the Rajasthan Non-Govt Educational Institutions Act, 1989, and corresponding rules from 1993. The document further emphasizes that the institution neglected to follow instructions, rules, and circulars issued by education authorities.
Specific Provisions for Current Students
Despite the suspension of future admissions, the order includes provisions to protect current students' academic continuity. Students who recently completed their Class 11 finals this month will be permitted to continue into Class 12 for the 2026-27 academic session.
"We have made provisions to ensure that the academic progress of students does not get affected," explained Sita Ram Jat, Director for Secondary Education, in comments to media outlets on Friday.
Administrative Response and Oversight Measures
The Jaipur District Education Officer (DEO) for secondary education has been designated as officer-in-charge to manage the transition of affected Neerja Modi School students to nearby institutions. This officer holds authorization to:
- Issue transfer certificates to currently enrolled students
- Facilitate admissions at alternative schools
- Oversee the entire relocation process
Department officials emphasized that their investigation revealed the school administration "lacked sensitivity towards child safety" after examining available facts, evidence, and documentation.
Legal Context and Parental Concerns
This education department order emerged on the same day (March 18) that the Rajasthan High Court granted Neerja Modi School interim relief by staying an earlier CBSE order that had restricted its senior secondary affiliation.
Parent representatives have raised questions about the timing and independence of the departmental action. "What were government officials doing earlier if their observations are the same as those of the CBSE?" questioned Abhishek Jain Bittu, spokesperson for the Sanyukta Abhibhavak Sangh parents' body.
Bittu further suggested that "the department should have conducted its own investigation and issued the order independently; this order feels like a copy paste of the CBSE order."
Official Justification and Future Implications
Education department officials maintain that their decision aligns with both departmental guidelines and CBSE observations. "The decision has been taken as per the rules and guidelines of the department," Director Jat affirmed.
The suspension effectively prevents Neerja Modi School from admitting new students to Class 11 for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 academic years, and to Class 12 for the 2027-28 session. School administration officials did not provide immediate comments when contacted by media representatives.
This case highlights increasing scrutiny of educational institution compliance with safety protocols and regulatory standards in Rajasthan's academic landscape.
